Sexual Violence Statistics
According to the Rape, Abuse, and Incest National Network (RAINN), sexual violence affects people of all genders and ages. However, certain groups are at higher risk than others. Here are the facts to know.
Age Groups At Highest Risk
RAINN data shows that individuals between the ages of 12-34 are the most likely victims of rape and sexual assault. This age group accounts for 69% of all victims of sexual violence, which is a startling statistic. The next highest age bracket is those between 38-64 years old. Those aged 65+ have the lowest rate of sexual violence at 3%.
Gender Disparities in Sexual Violence
RAINN data shows women and girls have a higher rate of sexual violence than men and boys. 1 out of every 6 women in the U.S. has been the victim of attempted or completed rape in their lifetime. Young women between 16 and 10 are four times as likely than the general population to be victims of sexual violence. 1 in 33 men has experienced attempted or completed rape in their lifetime, and 1 in every 10 rape victims is male.
Risk Factors Associated with Sexual Violence
Certain risk factors are associated with being a victim or survivor of sexual assault. These include having an intellectual disability, being part of an LGBTQ+ community, experiencing homelessness, or have had previous traumatic experiences related to abuse or neglect.
Sexual Violence Impacts Everyone
Sexual violence affects people from all walks of life; however, certain groups are more vulnerable due to various factors such as age, gender identity, race/ethnicity, income level, etc. Through education on healthy boundaries and consent, along with providing resources for survivors, we can work towards creating a safer environment for everyone, regardless of their circumstances.
